Get involved in the Boston DSA priorities that build our local socialist movement and strengthen our chapter. Sign up today, and an organizer will get in touch with you. External: Labor Priority Covid has thrown class struggle into high relief. As workers fight for their rights and better conditions, we have seen wins and losses in 2021 that have generated a momentum which cannot be ignored. Boston DSA has an opportunity to demonstrate and reflect on the value of collective action in workplace struggles across Boston and Massachusetts, and to build collective action into inherent practice. A labor priority centers workers in the chapter, intersecting with Electoral, Political Education, Mutual Aid, and other working groups, and builds upon the momentum of our unprecedented work in 2021. Defeat the Gig Worker Referendum This priority calls for DSA to join the campaign to defeat the industry sponsored referendum that would classify gig workers as contractors and deprive them of labor law protections. A “Vote No” victory will mean a significant defeat for corporate “labor flexibility” schemes. It would bring together the Labor and Electoral working groups along with our local neighborhood committees and YDSA’s to organize in their specific sectors and areas to boost opposition. In addition it will mobilize the chapter infrastructure to boost participation of new and inactive members, and support organizer skills trainings across the participating bodies. Internal: Building a Culture of Organizing Priorities should be something that everyone in the chapter can plug into. Rather than a separate campaign, this priority asks us to identify crucial organizing skills and practices that every socialist should be familiar with, and that can be immediately implemented across all Working Groups, committees, neighborhood and industry groups to bolster their organizing. Each WG, committee, and neighborhood group has its own strong and weak points, and by committing to building a more coherent culture of organizing across the chapter, each group can strengthen its work, retain and grow its active membership, and share its best practices. Leadership Development and Support Boston DSA has many leadership positions, and most active members find themselves in one eventually. However, these roles are diffused throughout the chapter, with little formal support or training, leading to insecurity, inefficiency, loss of institutional knowledge–and then burnout, which pushes newer comrades into leadership roles before they feel ready, thus perpetuating the burnout cycle. Each year, we have prioritized activating our membership, recruiting new comrades and onboarding them into becoming skilled organizers. This year, we should take the time to support them in taking the next step, preparing our rank-and-file members to become efficient, resilient leaders.
