Public school teachers can be the first to recognize a student's talent and encourage pursue their dreams. Public investment in arts education empower working class students to see a future working in creative fields. And in 2023, a year in which LA's public school teachers, workers, writers and actors all went on strike, an even stronger connection was formed. Both public schools and creative workers are up against billionaires trying to destroy the work they love. Hollywood workers and teachers love their jobs - and the rich and powerful try and take advantage. But together, they are stronger. That's why workers showed up for each other on their respective picket lines! Now, in 2024, LA's public school teachers need our help. UTLA, the LA teachers union, has endorsed working class champions Karla Griego and Kahllid Al-Alim to run for seats on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board. DSA-LA is proud and honored to join them in fighting to get them elected. You can learn more about them here! While Kahllid and Karla are incredible candidates, these will not be easy races. In 2020 and in 2022, billionaire executives like Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings have gone all in on defeating UTLA candidates. Hastings, like many other billionaires, is a believer (and investor) in charter school movements, a fancy name for privatizing our public schools and destroying union power. If we lose this year, charter school advocates will be the majority of the school board and will start dismantling our public schools. We can't let them win! We've all seen what Netflix has done to our industry - we can't let them do the same thing to our public education. Thankfully, last year taught us when workers come together and fight, they can do incredible things. Let's keep that momentum going!
