Letter to fellow FCPS Colleagues

Dear Colleagues, This school year has affirmed that having a stronger say in our working conditions is critical to decreasing the stress FCP staff are currently experiencing and have experienced for a long time. Even before COVID-19 exposed the fragility of our system, FCPS employees experienced deteriorating working conditions, instability, and limited input in the decisions impacting our health and livelihoods. During the pandemic, stagnate pay, understaffing, higher workloads, and unsafe conditions have made working at FCPS even more precarious. As fallout continues, this untenable situation is reaching a breaking point. Many of us are unwilling to accept this stress and uncertainty as the status quo. We’re coming together for a stronger voice, especially when it comes to the time, resources, and respect needed to best serve students. Collective bargaining is that stronger voice. It’s a guaranteed seat at the table to address staffing shortages, safe working conditions, pay and benefits, and anything else at FCPS that would make teaching, working, and learning the best it can be. The FCPS school board is working on a resolution that would grant Fairfax school division employees collective bargaining rights. However, in order to make collective bargaining a reality, we have to demonstrate that a critical mass of educators want a stronger say in their working conditions. We do this by showing the district that staff are united. Standing together is our only way to reverse unfair expectations and raise standards for ourselves and our students. Without educators, there is no FCPS, which is why we are asking you to join us in building a wide base of support to pass collective bargaining as soon as possible. How much longer can educators face unfair expectations that make it hard for us to do our jobs? We deserve so much more than what we have right now. Can we count on your support? Sign onto our “Dear Colleagues” letter if you believe educators deserve a stronger say in the decisions that impact our lives. We can no longer allow a few administrators to make decisions for all of us. Sincerely, Xxxx x xxxx
