Add your name to the student athlete community letter calling on the 2028 Olympics to go plastic-free! ☀️🌊🥇 Pollution from single-use plastic cups and takeout containers harms our environment and health. As California prepares to host thousands of athletes and millions of visitors, we can prevent this harmful plastic pollution with a commitment form LA28 to eliminate single-use plastic in the Games. California’s student athletes’ voices are uniquely positioned to call for real change. Our voices truly count. Sign our open letter to add your name to the effort! LETTER: Dear International Olympic Committee & LA28, From the air we breathe while training to the water we drink on the sidelines, athletes depend on clean air, safe water, and healthy environments. But from production to disposal, plastic pollution threatens all three. Single-use plastic goods, products designed to become trash after just one use, threaten our health and the very environments where we train, compete, and recover. We know that the 2028 LA Olympic and Paralympic Games will transform communities around our state, welcoming thousands of athletes and coaches. With millions of visitors coming to California for the Games, the result could be millions of disposable cups, bottles, and containers used once and thrown away unless we take meaningful steps to reduce single-use plastics. And history shows the stakes are real: the 2016 Games in Rio alone produced more than 6,000 metric tons of trash. Without intentional decisions to limit this waste, we will see an influx of single-use plastic cups, takeout boxes, forks and bags dumped after each event, sending millions of pieces of plastic trash to clog our landfills, litter host communities, and pollute our coastline. Athletes are taught to respect our facilities, take care of our bodies, and leave every space better than we found it. The Games should reflect those same values. The Olympic and Paralympic Games are all about showing the incredible accomplishments humans are capable of, both on the field and off. The IOC and LA28 have a unique opportunity to lead by example and deliver a competition environment that matches the discipline, excellence, and responsibility athletes bring to sport by: Prohibiting single-use plastics in venues, fanzones, and Olympic Village dining areas Offering beverages only in reusable cups across venues Replacing single-use plates, food containers and cups in the Olympic Village at UCLA with reusable ones that are cleaned and reused instead of thrown away Providing widespread water refill stations to reduce water bottle waste Incentivizing attendees to bring and use reusable bottles and containers By preventing plastic pollution at the Games, the IOC and LA28 can set up LA to reduce waste at all future events– supporting healthier, cleaner communities long after the closing ceremony. As athletes who believe in setting the highest standard, we urge you to eliminate single-use plastics during the 2028 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Sincerely, The undersigned athletes
