May Day 2026 Pledge

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Did you know? On May 1st, workers around the world will be celebrating International Workers Day. This holiday commemorates the struggle for the 8-hour work day, fought for and secured by the organization of regular workers, and our ongoing fight to ensure democracy to all working persons. In the spring of 1886, Chicago unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists, and workers organized in solidarity for the eight-hour work day. On Saturday, May 1, 1886, 35,000 workers walked off their jobs. Tens of thousands more workers joined them on May 3 and 4 for a general strike, which led to the police shooting and killing at least two striking workers. In response, this mass action culminated in the Haymarket Affair where a bomb would be thrown by an unknown actor. Police began to indiscriminately fire into the crowd, killing eleven people and injuring at least 70 others. Eight anarchists were charged for the bombing, only two of them had actually been at the event. Four were hanged. The state later admitted to acting without evidence, pardoning the remaining four 6 years later. As he was hung, the anarchist, August Spies shouted, "The time will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today." Join us this May Day to commemorate the lives lost in the struggle for dignified working conditions and to celebrate workers around the world! May 1st, 2026 will be a national day of action for workers. In the tradition of workers’ movements around the world, workers, students, and families will be taking action together to celebrate the history of workers movements and to demand change that puts working families first, gets corporate money out of politics and takes care of our neighbors by dismantling ICE. Thousands of organizations across the country are calling for a day of “No School, No Work, No Shopping” to disrupt the violent corporate rule of our country and to put workers first. Together we will show where real power lies in this country: with workers, not corporations. Please take a pledge to carry on this tradition and celebrate the struggle for working people to live decent, dignified, loving, and fulfilling lives
