We are women from every corner of society - mothers, daughters, friends, sisters, grandmothers, partners, colleagues, caregivers and leaders - united in rejecting the discrimination and exclusion of transgender people in our name. Those who continue to target this minority group do not speak for us or represent our interests. We call on politicians and the media to stop scapegoating trans people, who have long shared our spaces and been valued members of our community, and to urgently focus on the real issues of violence and inequalities affecting women and girls. We do not shame or blame any woman who has felt anxious or uncertain about trans rights, given the media and certain politicians portraying our trans siblings as a threat. No matter your starting point, we welcome all women to join us in learning together and building an Australia where all are free, supported and safe from gender-based oppression. Our vision is for a society where all people can live their lives with equality, dignity and free from discrimination, with inclusive and diverse women’s spaces that don’t police our looks, and for proper funding for family and domestic violence services. Throughout our lives, we have endured harassment, discrimination, violence, and abuse in countless forms. From childhood catcalls to workplace discrimination, from domestic violence to sexual assault, from being silenced in boardrooms, to being blamed for crimes committed against us – we know intimately what the real threat to women looks like. We refuse to allow our experiences to be weaponized against other women and marginalized people, who are even more likely to be victims of violence themselves. We refuse to go along with a culture of gender policing of anyone who doesn’t fit into rigid stereotypes. We refuse to stay silent. Under the guise of protecting women, anti-trans politicians are pushing an agenda that threatens women's rights, jeopardizing bodily autonomy, and opening the door to attacks on reproductive healthcare. We witness the devastating impact of anti-trans rhetoric, aimed predominantly at trans women, that masquerades as feminism while advancing nothing but harm. We see politicians weaponising fear to avoid addressing the systemic issues that actually endanger and disadvantage women. We watch media outlets generate moral panic for profit while refusing to address the domestic and family violence that claims women’s lives. ENOUGH We call on Australian politicians and media to recognize the countless women across the country who are supportive of the trans+ community and their rights. If you are a woman and you agree please join us in creating a kinder, more inclusive Australia by adding your signature to this letter and sharing it with the other women in your life.
