But it isn't only workers who have lost their jobs who need protections, millions of low-wage and hourly workers who remain on the job do so without adequate healthcare, and the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act has big coverage gaps that leave millions of front-line workers without paid sick time. Many healthcare and long-term care workers, janitorial workers, food service workers, gig workers, and others who are doing heroic work in the face of the COVID-19 crisis lack the ability to stay home if they, or a family member, are sick. With the support of Raise Up, State Rep. Paul Donato and State Sen. Jason Lewis have filed Emergency Paid Sick Time legislation for immediate use during the COVID-19 outbreak. This Emergency Paid Sick Time would be available to employees not covered by the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
