Urge the Postal Board of Governors to Protect Vote by Mail Now

A voter should not lose their voice because of a delayed postmark. Right now, that is exactly what is happening and will continue across the country unless USPS takes action. Recent reporting shows that changes at the Postal Service are already delaying when ballots receive postmarks, especially in rural communities. Because of these delays, ballots mailed on time can still be rejected. This problem stems from a service slowdown and a shift in how mail is processed from former Postmaster General DeJoy’s “Delivering for America” plan. Local processing has been removed from many communities and replaced with distant regional hubs. Ballots that used to be processed locally are now transported long distances – sometimes even across state lines – before they even receive a postmark. In some cases, that delay can take days. Election officials rely on postmarks to determine whether a ballot was mailed before the deadline. When postmarks are delayed, ballots become vulnerable to rejection, legal challenges, and confusion after Election Day. We are already seeing the consequences. In Washington state, record numbers of ballots were rejected because of late postmarks. In Oregon, ballots mailed just miles away from county clerks had to travel hundreds of miles before being processed and returned to be counted. This is a direct threat to election integrity. The Postal Board of Governors has the power to fix this. They oversee USPS operations and can require the restoration of real-time postmarks for election mail. Demand the Postal Board of Governors protect vote by mail and restore real-time postmarks before more ballots are put at risk by adding your name now.
