Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s new Ban Warehouse Detention Act would prohibit DHS from converting or operating any warehouse (or similar industrial structure) for the purpose of detaining people. Immigrant detention is already unjust and inhumane, but Trump’s administration is trying to expand it rapidly by buying up warehouses across the country. Each warehouse could cage between 1,500 and 10,000 people! Warehouses are designed and built to hold objects, not people. People are not commodities to be shipped, discarded, and profited off of. Already, ICE’s mostly for-profit detention centers are deeply dehumanizing, abusive, and deadly. So far in 2026, at least 17 people have died in ICE detention. Detention staff routinely violate people’s human and constitutional rights to due process, clean water, necessary medical care, and more. Confining people in massive, makeshift warehouses will exponentially increase the risks of death and abuse. These warehouses also take huge amounts of water and land. A Georgia city manager said that one proposed warehouse detention center’s planned water usage would “drain the town” of water, using more than the town’s total permit of a million gallons a day. So far, local residents have succeeded in blocking that facility. And across the country, everyday people are speaking up and blocking proposed ICE detention centers in their communities. Rep. Rashida Tlaib is bringing this movement to Congress, partnering with the grassroots group Detention Watch Network on her new bill. (The organization is also coordinating a National Day of Action to Stop ICE Warehouse Detention on Saturday, April 25.) Please add your name as a grassroots co-sponsor of the Ban Warehouse Detention Act to demand Congress stand up for immigrants and pass this critical legislation.
