Sign the petition: Build more affordable housing

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

California’s elected leaders need to make it easier to build new housing, helping workers afford to stay in our state and creating good-paying construction jobs. WGA members are on strike this week, bringing scripted television production to a halt. Soaring housing costs are one of the main reasons why writers are demanding better wages. California has a housing shortage and affordability crisis, squeezing workers of all kinds. We need to build millions of new homes close to jobs, services, good schools, and transit. But most cities in California have made it illegal to build multi-family homes in high-demand neighborhoods. It’s not just TV writers who are struggling. By killing new home construction, these cities have also killed thousands of good-paying construction jobs, forcing skilled construction workers to leave our state to find more reliable, sustainable work. One way we can support workers is to build more housing. Will you sign California YIMBY’s petition and urge state leaders to make it easier to build new housing and help workers afford to live in the Golden State? The WGA estimates that the average writer-producer pay declined by 4% over the last decade – and fell by 23% when you adjust for inflation, including LA’s soaring housing costs. For many of the construction workers who remain in California, the housing shortage means they’re forced to spend hours every day commuting to job sites – because they still can’t afford to live in or near the homes they build. But you can help workers stay in (and return to) the Golden State, build and live in the homes we need, and contribute to making our state more affordable and equitable – and ensure workers earn a good living, with good pay. When we say “yes” to more homes in our communities, we create good-paying jobs for the construction workers we need to end our housing shortage and affordability crisis – and make California more affordable and equitable for everyone. Add your name: Tell California’s leaders to make it easier to build new housing and help workers afford to live in the Golden State!
