Support Expanded PATH Service for NJ Businesses

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

Dear Commissioners of the Port Authority of NY/NJ, We write on behalf of New Jersey’s business community to strongly urge the Port Authority to expand PATH service and connectivity — infrastructure that is critical to the continued economic health of communities such across Essex & Hudson Counties. The PATH system is an essential network linking some of New Jersey’s most vibrant commercial hubs with Manhattan. Its affordability and reliability are directly tied to the success of our local economies, and its shortcomings in off-peak frequency and connectivity are increasingly limiting growth and opportunity. While we understand the PATH Forward project is ongoing, we ask the Port Authority to: Improve off-peak weekday service Provide clear timetables for the conclusion of PATH Forward Prioritize the PATH train when drafting your budget this fall. The numbers clearly demonstrate why the business community wants this: In 2024, New Jersey’s tourism sector reached a record $50.6 billion in visitor spending, with billions flowing directly into PATH-served cities like Jersey City, Hoboken, Harrison, and Newark, supporting 8.3% of all jobs in the state and generating $5.4 billion in state and local taxes. Numerous studies have shown that investment in public transit drives local business growth and economic development including through increased foot traffic and productivity gains, resulting in a potential 5-to-1 return on investment. The PATH carried nearly 105,000 riders on a typical Saturday, 79,000 on Sundays, and 98,000 on holidays in 2024—clear evidence that off-peak ridership has rebounded and is a significant driver of local economic activity. Current off-peak service every 20 minutes is simply not enough. It causes overcrowding, delays, and discourages people from using transit to shop, dine, entertain, and explore. Moving to 5–10 minute service during off-peak periods would: Help restaurants, retailers, and event venues in PATH-linked areas capture more weekend and nighttime revenue Support the thousands of service, medical/first responders and hospitality workers commuting during non-traditional hours Improve safety and reliability for all riders Better transit means better business. We call on the Port Authority and both states to take bold action — not only to meet today’s demand but to unlock tomorrow’s economic opportunity for New Jersey’s cities, small businesses, and working families. To unlock opportunity for small businesses and tourism, we urge the Port Authority to prioritize an Increase for off-peak PATH. Sincerely,
