Tell Senate Democrats: New Majority, New Leader

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

In the midterms, voters did something Democrats haven't done in a generation: they swept the Senate. Seven Republican seats flipped, with two more still uncalled. Maine, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina. The voters who did that weren't voting for business as usual. They were firing it. And the day after the polls closed, Chuck Schumer stood at a podium and announced the result of a vote that hasn't happened yet: "The issue is not me. I'll be reelected as majority leader." That's a coronation and we've seen that movie before. A year ago, after Schumer surrendered the government shutdown for nothing, now he wants to keep the gavel. This time, though, the caucus isn't falling in line. At least seven incoming senators: Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan, Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota, Adam Hamilton of Kansas, Troy Jackson of Maine, and others, have said they want new leadership during their campaigns. And now Senator Chris Van Hollen, who flew to El Salvador when nobody else would, says no senator should commit to anyone without a "bold agenda" to unrig an economy "built to serve billionaires and big corporations." Every Democratic senator and senator-elect is free to run, free to vote their conscience, and free to choose a leader who will actually fight. To every Democratic senator and senator-elect, we demand: No coronation. Hold a real, contested leadership election in December. No clearing the field, no pressure campaigns, no backroom deals. A new majority leader — not Chuck Schumer. After a decade at the top, it is time for a new leader. A bold agenda or no vote. Only support a leader who commits, in writing, to get corporate money out of politics, put money in working people's pockets, guarantee health care, and put real checks on Donald Trump and his billionaire backers. The voters just handed you the majority you've wanted for years. Use it.
