Members of the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association and Tulsa Public School educators are organizing a march from Tulsa to the Oklahoma City State Capitol as part of the teacher walkout to support education. Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Deborah Gist, parents, students, and community members will join marchers along the way. The route, which is 110 miles, will be divided into 10 days of travel, allowing for supporters to either walk the entire duration or one or more segments. The march will begin on Saturday, April 7th and culminate on Monday, April 16th with marchers joining thousands of public education supporters at the capitol to call on the legislators pass the 'Together We're Stronger Plan' to fund public education. Along the way, marchers will stay at host sites including schools and churches. Donations of food and water are greatly appreciated. If there are individuals that are not able to walk or only wish to walk part of the day, we plan to have support vehicles that can provide rides. Our goal is to make this as accessible to as many people as possible. This march for education is an additional way to support the fight for public education in Oklahoma. It is a symbol of our solidarity. Marches have a historical legacy in the United States. They draw attention to crucial issues affecting our society and help drive policy. For more information on the longest march in U.S. history, read about Cesar Chavez and the 340-mile march from Delano to Sacramento organized in 1966 in order to shed light on the plight of farm workers in the U.S. *All information about the march is tentative until further notice.
