Now, Seattle is the first city in the nation to take a big step forward and try to ban surveillance pricing, by passing The Fair and Transparent Pricing Policy. Surveillance pricing uses your personal data to create a price specific to you. The goal is to charge you the maximum amount the AI-facilitated algorithm believes you’re willing to pay and that means you could end up paying more for the same item from the same place than someone else. A Consumer Reports investigation of Instacart’s algorithmic pricing found price differences as high as 23% between different consumers and noted that this technology could cost families more than $1,200 a year. We spoke to Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson to talk about why this law is historic, and how this tech is so damaging to working people already struggling to afford basic necessities.
