As the 2023 legislative year begins, Climate Action California (formerly the 350 Silicon Valley Legislation/Policy team) is in the thick of it! Our volunteers and coalition partners are drafting bill proposals, meeting with legislators and allied groups, finishing up our website, and applying for 501(c)(4) non-profit status. It’s a little complicated starting up a new organization while continuing our engagement with the state legislature and regulatory agencies…but it’s all good and we’re excited about the year ahead. Please join us! We’re a volunteer-led organization, and new volunteers are always welcome. We need new campaign team members and people who can help with the website, our newsletter, social media…(and we can really use a volunteer attorney who can advise a nonprofit). Whether you have a lot of time or a little to work on climate, and if you're new to this work or an experienced campaigner—we have plenty of good work to do and wonderful people to do it with. Check the boxes on the form to let us know where your interests lie, and we'll be in touch! We organize our work in topic-specific campaign teams, who watch and advocate for strong climate legislation and policy in these areas: Transportation: Working with coalitions and other groups to accelerate the move to zero-emissions vehicles from cars to heavy-duty trucks—and raise California’s ambition to get it done Plastics: Working on legislation and local action to eliminate plastic/fossil fuel products, advocate for recycling, and reduce plastic waste Refrigerants: Reducing these potent greenhouse gases by replacing commercial refrigeration equipment in supermarkets and convenience stores with equipment that uses “natural” refrigerants Methane from agriculture: Animal agriculture, especially dairies, are huge sources of methane in California. Plenty to do here, reducing emissions from both manure and cow burps. Methane from stationary sources: Promoting policies reducing this potent climate pollutant emitted by landfills (including by diverting wasted food); and extracting, refining, and transporting oil and gas Energy policy: A broad category that includes utility pricing and regulation of oil and gas wells Building electrification: Advocating for local, state, and federal policies moving us toward eliminating natural gas (methane) Climate finance: Banks, insurers, pension funds and the Securities and Exchange Commission are all key to loosening fossil fuel’s death grip on the economy and the planet Federal legislation and policy: Focus on Washington. 2023 is the year to reauthorize the Farm Bill, which is all about climate
