They say young people are entitled, lazy and narcissistic. In fact, we are actively involved in their communities and over 93% of us are following the 2016 election because we know the huge impact this election will have on the future for all working people. As 2016 is in full swing, young union activists and NextUp Young Worker Groups are changing the rules that are manipulated to keep us from getting ahead. Many are doing amazing work to pass living wages, fighting the Trans-Pacific Partnership, supporting organizing or contract campaigns, working to end systemic racism, fighting for comprehensive immigration reform and more. This form will allow you to do two things: COMMIT to come speak up with other young union activists from across the country. Let NextUp know which action you are planning to participate in. #ThisIsWhyIVote. We know that Donald Trump is anti-union and doesn't stand with working people. More than ever, it's up to use to remind people that we vote because we have values that will help working people. Will you share a 30 second video on social media, using that hasthag, telling your friends and family why you vote? It's scary, but sharing our values is what moves people and it works! Voter Registration. 21% of eligible voters are under age 30 so we have to get them registered!(1) Commit to registering 100 people to vote between now and Sept. 27th, which is also National Voter Registration Day. That day, we'll coordinate events across the country with Young Worker Groups, and do a big social media push to highlight what young union members across can do. October 8th. Less than 20% of the eligible under-30 population voted in the 2014 elections.(1) You can turn out to talk to your community members through Labor 2016. Door knocking is good exercise, AND we'll be doing our civic duty to get young people to vote. SHARE details and stories about other work that you, your coworkers, and young worker groups are leading locally so we can lift that up high and proud! Don't forget to send us a few photos of your event to UpNext@aflcio.org or post to social media using #1uNextUp.
