In Haiti, the price of gas and energy has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the kidnapping of Maduro and the bombing of Tehran carried out in the early months of 2026, worsening the already ongoing shortages of food and supplies across the country. Across much of the country, gangs have taken over many supply lines such as roads, airports, and seaports, making the transportation of basic goods, and humans, difficult or impossible. Such is the case for the Good Shepherd Mission for Children (GSMC), which operates on the outskirts of Mibalè and serves over 40 children. Stuck in a region of heavy gang activity, the Mission is enduring a moment of pronounced food scarcity and severely lacking access to food, water, and medicine. Stateside, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled on 26 June 2026 that the DOH had the right to terminate TPS for Haitian and Syrian TPS holders in advance of the program's deadline. This puts 350,000 Haitians nationwide at risk of deportations back to Haiti. This is despite the fact that the US government currently has "do not travel" orders in place for Haiti due to the aforementioned instability. These Haitian TPS holders are now losing access to their jobs, and thus income, and will become unable to provide for themselves or their families. The Haitian Solidarity Language Group (HSLG) has partnered with Dr. Rev. Joyce Penfield, a life-long human rights advocate and organizer with the Akron-Palestine Solidarity Collective, to raise money for the Good Shepherd Mission for Children. Furthermore, in light of the SCOTUS ruling, Akron DSA has voted to start a mutual aid fund for TPS holders in the Akron-Canton area. As such, donations to the Haitian Solidarity Fund will be divided as follows: 70% to Good Shepherd Mission for Children 10% to Haitian Bridge Alliance 10% to Haitian Community Support Center 10% to Akron ICE Watch The HSLG is a subcommittee of the Akron Multilingual Socialist Caucus (AMSC) of Akron DSA focused on migrant rights and international politics from a Haitian perspective.
