Montgomery County Rent Stabilization Campaign

Our Montgomery County rent stabilization campaign has held six canvasses with up to 45 people joining us to talk to tenants and collect their stories about why rent stabilization matters to them. Tenants we’ve canvassed have gone on to join future canvasses, submit testimony to the council and attend rallies. Members of the County Council have joined us to hear directly from tenants. We’ve also mobilized supporters to rallies at the County Council building, attended Montgomery County eviction court, collected testimonies and most importantly, we’ve got a bill, the HOME Act, to limit rent increases to 3% countywide permanently. Unfortunately, we’ve also quickly run through chapter funds while buying union-printed literature for volunteers to distribute during these canvasses. And conservative members of the council are backing an “anti-rent gouging” bill that would allow up to 15% rent increases, which will likely stretch out negotiations over rent stabilization bills into the summer. We want to keep up the momentum and keep organizing new tenants into this campaign but we need money to do so! A donation of $10, $25, or $50 or more will help us run more canvasses into the spring and summer.
