A motion to protect 30% of the Church Commissioners’ 103,000 acres by 2030 was weakened by an amendment backed by the Bishops. While it includes some positive, but vague, aims, it fails to set measurable, area-based targets for nature protection. Without a quantifiable percentage of land dedicated to nature, progress can’t be tracked, accountability is impossible, and action won’t match the urgency of the climate and biodiversity crises. While other major landowners work towards targets to restore nature at scale, the Church’s response doesn’t yet match its own teachings on Creation care. With vast resources, the Commissioners could help bring nature back from the brink. Instead, it's settled for small-scale action without accountability. As both spiritual leader and a Church Commissioner, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop Sarah Mullally, can change this. By publicly supporting a measurable, area-based target to protect and restore nature on the Commissioners’ land, she’d show that the Church means what it preaches.
