Ask the Biden Administration to protect gray wolves

In its final weeks, the Trump Administration issued a rule that left gray wolves across the United States without Endangered Species Act protections. In late February of this year, the state of Wisconsin–granted new authority to manage the fragile wolf population by the Trump Administration–set a hunting and trapping season. More than 200 wolves were killed in just days. 85 percent reportedly died at the hands of "hounders" using packs of dogs to chase them to their death. This is nothing remotely resembling conservation or good wildlife management. What happened in Wisconsin is a failure at all levels. The USFWS abandoned the job of wolf recovery long before it is finished, turning its back on wolves and turning them over to conflicted and ill-prepared state wildlife agencies. Lacking the will to challenge legal maneuvering by hunting groups, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued a hastily considered season and was demonstrably unable to control its outcome. What followed was one of the most horrific periods of carnage wolves have seen since they were wiped from the landscape nearly a century ago. Wisconsin's failure to carry out the most basic levels of assuring that quotas and other wildlife laws are enforced are heartbreaking evidence that states are simply unable or unwilling to do the job of protecting gray wolves. The USFWS and its leadership at the Department of Interior must rescind or abandon the Trump wolf delisting and again extend Endangered Species Act protections to gray wolves. We can't sit idly by while Wisconsin or other states plan their next slaughter. President Biden and Interior Secretary Haaland must act promptly to right this wrong. Please send the Biden Administration an email today.
