Illinois has a strong state law protecting the privacy and security of our public school students’ personal data, SOPPA. Unfortunately, enforcement of the law is solely in the hands of our state AG. Even though it has been illegal to sell student data since 2017, there has been no action taken by the AG against vendors that do—even when they have major state contracts, like the College Board and ACT, Inc. HB 2696 would add another way to enforce SOPPA. It would let families sue vendors who violate it. Illinois families *should* have the right to sue tech and testing companies that aren't keeping their children's data safe or are commercially exploiting it. Moreover, as the federal government cuts jobs and funding at agencies that enforce protections for student data, the State of Illinois should step up and strengthen state law. You can use this link to email your state rep to ask them to sponsor HB 2696: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/ask-rep-sponsor-hb-2696?source=email& Thanks!
