Big win in NYC

New York City just made history by becoming the first major U.S. city to announce it will stop future pension investments in private equity-backed fossil fuel companies. Thanks to relentless pressure from community organizers, climate advocates, and Americans for Financial Reform (AFR), NYC Comptroller Brad Lander made this bold decision, setting a new precedent for public pension funds nationwide. By cutting off new investments in private equity fossil fuels, the city is protecting $207 billion in pension assets from being tied to a dying industry. If adopted by the pension funds’ trustees, this will be a monumental step in moving our financial systems away from dirty energy and into a sustainable future. For years, we have worked alongside researchers at the Private Equity Climate Risks consortium and activists on the ground, providing critical research and resources to expose the dangers of private equity's investment in fossil fuel projects. These companies have long gambled with public pension funds, driving money into risky, polluting industries while harming the environment and endangering the financial security of retirees. NYC’s decision changes the game. But this victory didn’t happen overnight. It took years of organizing, advocacy, and coalition-building. Groups worked tirelessly, providing data and reports that highlighted the financial and environmental risks tied to fossil fuel investments. Local activists applied pressure, holding rallies and meetings, engaging policymakers, and ensuring the Comptroller’s office knew that New Yorkers demanded action. Together, we’ve proven that people power can force real change, even in the face of fierce opposition from Wall Street and the fossil fuel industry. Now it’s time to show our appreciation because a simple message of gratitude will go a long way in reinforcing this decision -- which still needs to be confirmed by the pension funds’ trustees -- and encouraging continued climate leadership. Click ‘START WRITING’ to sign and send a thank you to Comptroller Lander for standing with climate advocates and protecting New York City’s pensions from the long-term risks of fossil fuels now.
