Clean Air Is Not Optional: Comment on Shintech's Polluting Permits

On Friday, March 20, 2026, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) proposed draft air operating and modification and prevention of significant deterioration permits for the 300-acre Shintech Plaquemine Plant 3 (SPP3) in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. If approved, Shintech would be permitted to continue to produce billions of pounds of caustic soda, chlorine, VCM, and ethylene dichloride every year, resulting in over 700,000 tons of CO₂e emissions a year. Of those living within three miles of SPP3, 77% are BIPOC, 42% are low-income, and 9% are under 5 years old. Due to air pollution, residents within a 3-mile radius of Shintech already have a higher cancer risk than 98% of Louisianans. When called out for the blatant health and environmental impacts on surrounding communities, Shintech officials stated that they “believed that the social and economic benefits of the facility outweigh environmental impacts.” Let’s be clear, there are significant negative health impacts and no financial benefits for native Louisianans. Take a few moments to submit public comments and requests for hearings by Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 4:30 PM CT. This is your chance to fight back and refuse to allow for Shintech to continue down their path of harm and abuse in our communities.
