Letter to the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory

Dear Chief Minister, I’m sure you were as devasted as I was by Minister Tanyá Plibersek’s recent announcement on the Lee Point development. It is hard to understand why federal Labor would make such a shocking decision unless it was misled by poor advice. Some of my reasons for strongly objecting to this development are: 1. Lee Point is important to the Larrakia people for cultural reasons. I have never met a Larrakia person who has been consulted or supports the housing at Lee Point. 2. Most people including myself (change if incorrect) did not know about the Lee Point development prior to 2020. We do not want this urban sprawl to proceed. There is plenty of cleared land closer to defence bases in Darwin that is suitable. 3. Darwin has a housing rental crisis and does not need high cost housing located at Lee Point (away from public transport). It needs affordable rental properties. 4. Wiping out 70% of old growth trees at Lee Point that are hundreds of years old is not protecting Gouldian Finch habitat or critical habitat in Darwin’s last wildlife corridor. 5. For Australia to make international commitments about ending deforestation by 2030 then to continue with the deforestion of old growth forests at Lee Point is irresponsible. I understand that Labor stands up for social justice and the environmental. I’m asking you and the Labor Government to pause the development and have the (independent) NT Planning Commission complete a comprehensive Area Plan for the whole of Lee Point. Yours Sincerely
