Commission on the Environment threatened; time to object!

San Francisco probably does have too many commissions and boards; that's why voters passed Prop E in 2024, establishing the Commission Streamlining Task Force. In September, that Task Force voted to recommend downgrading the Commission on the Environment, responsible for the oversight and management of SF Environment Department, from a governance body to an advisory body that will sunset after three years. While many commissions may indeed have become superfluous or inactive, the Commission on the Environment has not. As the only public forum dedicated to climate and environmental issues in San Francisco, it is responsible for significant environmental and climate policy-making and citywide coordination among departments. Downgrading it effectively removes its ability to make decisions on issues like climate action, waste contracts, and pesticide regulations. Please write to oppose this change before the Dec. 12th Task Force meeting - before it reaches the Board of Supervisors. The Commission plays a crucial role in accountability, climate leadership, and environmental justice. Making it advisory-only would eliminate transparency, weaken oversight, and slow the City’s progress on the Climate Action Plan. The City needs to prioritize the climate now!
