DC Council Should Reject Ineffective Corporate Giveaways

The budget in front of the DC Council would invest scarce resources into disproven “trickle-down” tactics at the expense of health care and supports for workers and families. Send an email now: The DC Council must reject wasteful and ineffective corporate giveaways that won’t grow the economy. The current budget would: Subsidize a billionaire and wealthy sports team co-owners to build a stadium in spite of consensus from economists that stadiums do not have a strong economic benefit. Revive the Qualified High Technology Company tax incentive, which the Chief Financial Officer found to be costly without any sign of economic benefits. Suspend taxes on restaurant meals via “sales tax holidays,” despite research showing they benefit wealthy residents the most. Increase spending on the “Office-to-Anything” tax incentive with zero evidence-based rationale or plans to evaluate the program. All of these proposed investments would funnel public dollars to the corporate class while failing to grow the economy. Contact your DC Councilmembers now and urge them to reject ineffective corporate giveaways.
