In fact, when you control for inflation, half the states spend less on K-12 education than they did before the recession. In 38 states, the average teacher salary is lower today than it was a decade ago. And cuts to higher education are even more drastic: 41 states spend less per student than before the recession. All of this is happening while Republicans nationally and at the state level are cutting taxes, mostly for the wealthy and corporations. The AFT released a new report last month, “A Decade of Neglect,” describing how chronic underfunding and austerity measures have hurt our public schools. We have broken out funding, in both higher education and K-12, state by state. We want state legislators to see this report and understand how underfunding schools affects our students and educators.
