Michigan’s tipped minimum wage is an abysmal $3.93 per hour, forcing servers -- mostly women and people of color -- to survive on unpredictable tips and stolen wages. It is a vestige of slavery that belongs in the past. Thanks to a July 2024 ruling from the Michigan Supreme Court, the state’s tipped minimum wage is set to be phased out entirely by 2030. The first of a series of gradual increases to the wage is scheduled for February 21st. Unfortunately, however, tipped workers may not get to benefit from the Court-ordered mandate next week. Last night, the Senate passed an amended version of Democratic Senator Kevin Hertel’s bill, SB 8, which keeps the tipped minimum wage on the books at 60% of the regular minimum. This disgraceful bill passed the Senate 20-12, with eight Democratic senators -- led by Senators Moss, Singh, and Hertel -- breaking trust with the workers they swore to fight for. To those senators, we ask: Why don’t restaurant workers deserve a living wage? Gov. Whitmer has said she believes in fair wages and dignity for workers. She needs to prove it by vetoing SB 8 if it reaches her desk. Click “Start Writing to send a letter to Gov. Whitmer demanding she veto SB 8 if it reaches her desk and stand with Michigan tipped workers now.
