COP29 will bring hundreds of thousands of decision-makers investing in the future of energy to Azerbaijan, a close ally of Turkey, Russia, and Iran, and recent perpetrator of the ethnic cleansing of over 100,000 indigenous Armenians from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Furthermore, it is this stolen land which is being exploited as the site of their "green energy zone", which will yield investment in fulfilling over >$40B in fossil fuel deals. The ruling regime is also the sole benefactor of financial investment in the country, which also makes Azerbaijan one of the 30 most corrupt countries out of 180 with a score of 23/100. Investing in their projects means investing in presiding dictator Ilham Aliyev, who is unapologetically invested in the continued proliferation of fossil fuels which already account for over 90% of exports and 98% of the country’s energy mix - and still set to increase by a third over the next decade to fulfill over $40B of oil and gas from fossil fuel companies including BP and Russian Lukoil.
