All of it despite Fox agreeing to pay Dominion Voting Services a punishing $787.5 million to settle a defamation lawsuit that had already exposed the lies and misinformation were known and approved by executives at the top, including Fox billionaire owner Rupert Murdoch.[7] The reality is Fox “News” isn’t actually a news channel at all. It’s a dangerous and divisive spreader of disinformation campaigns and if you subscribe to cable TV -- even if you never watch the channel -- YOU are helping fund it! That’s because all the major cable companies actually pay Fox something called “carriage fees.” It’s guaranteed revenue and helps create their 35 to 40% profit margin. In fact, most of their money comes from these fees making Fox one of the few TV channels that doesn’t care about commercials. Even if Fox lost all of their advertisers, they would still be profitable.[8] But that could all change, if we act fast. These carriage fees are up for renegotiation right now and with the shocking revelations that came out of the Dominion case and the still ongoing Smartmatic defamation lawsuit,[9] Fox is in a significantly weakened bargaining position. If the cable companies hear from customers in big enough numbers, they could decide to treat Fox like every other cable news channel and not pay any more carriage fees moving forward. They could decide to offer a Fox-free cable bundle for those of us unwilling to subsidize right-wing disinformation. They could decide to stop the spread of lies altogether and completely deplatform Fox now. To be clear, this type of pressure has worked before. Last summer, grassroots pressure got Verizon and DirecTV to stop streaming the One America News Network -- completely deplatforming another right-wing propaganda outlet that helped spread the Big Lie about the 2020 election.[10] Let’s make sure Fox is next.
