Virginia DEQ has documented repeated environmental violations during construction of the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project (SSEP) in Pittsylvania County. Inspections found failures to follow approved erosion and sediment-control requirements, properly maintain required controls, and follow construction sequencing. These were not simply paperwork violations. DEQ documented missing or improperly installed waterbars, inadequate stabilization, erosion, sediment-control failures, and deficiencies involving streams and wetlands. Now DEQ is considering a Consent Order that includes corrective requirements and a $179,068.50 civil charge. This public comment period is our opportunity to tell DEQ that enforcement must be strong enough to prevent additional violations—not simply address problems after they occur. We need people from both Virginia and North Carolina to submit comments. While this enforcement action concerns violations documented in Pittsylvania County, SSEP is part of a larger regional energy infrastructure system affecting communities across state lines. People throughout Virginia and North Carolina share an interest in clean water, healthy watersheds, environmental accountability, and how major pipeline projects are constructed and regulated.
