Opponents of endangered species protections in the House of Representatives have included extreme “riders” in these bills that could do real harm to already-imperiled species and block efforts to provide needed safeguards. The bills include riders to strip protections for gray wolves nationwide and for grizzly bears in the Yellowstone ecosystem. Several measures would stop any progress in saving North Atlantic right whales and Rice's whale, found only in the Gulf of Mexico. This highly endangered species urgently needs the protections that Congressional leadership is seeking to deny in their flawed federal funding bills.
