If signed into law, this would allow court officers to retire at age 55 with 30 years of service. Uniformed court officers play a critical role within the state’s courts system by working to keep facilities safe for judges, court staff, attorneys, defendants, and the general public. Court officers face similar stressors as other law enforcement employees, but do not receive a comparable pension, which makes it difficult to recruit and retain qualified staff. Despite the similar nature of their work to other law enforcement jobs, Tier 6 court officers must work until age 63. Other law enforcement personnel can retire after 20 years of service. By allowing court officers to retire at age 55 with 30 years of service, this legislation takes a big step towards pension parity for these law enforcement personnel. Improving the pension will help the Unified Court System recruit and retain sufficient staff to keep facilities safe and secure.
