Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is refusing to put that money to work. Since Trump returned to office, the Federal Transit Administration has failed to sign a single new agreement through its largest transit construction grant program. More than $7 billion remains unobligated while communities wait for rail extensions, accessible subway stations, commuter trains, dedicated bus lanes, safer sidewalks, and improved connections to jobs and health care. These projects have already spent years moving through a demanding federal review process. The stalled projects span the country. Charleston is pursuing $374 million for rapid bus service. Los Angeles and Columbus each have projects seeking nearly $150 million. Utah is waiting on a $2.4 billion grant to expand commuter rail service, while Boston is seeking roughly $2 billion to modernize portions of its aging Green Line. Every delay increases construction costs and threatens the local financing communities need to complete these projects. Smaller cities face even greater danger because they lack the tax base to replace federal funding on their own. Residents who already voted to invest local money deserve the federal partnership they were promised. Secretary Duffy must stop withholding public money and immediately move qualified projects toward signed grant agreements.
