Join the effort to urge ICE to release Carlos Funez Monrroy and Erick Zelaya Alvarado from ICE detention in New Mexico. Carlos (at left above) and Erick (right) each survived physical assaults at the hands of guards in the notorious Torrance County Detention Facility (TCDF) and are at risk of deportation to danger in Honduras. Despite fear of well-documented retaliation by ICE detention staff in New Mexico, they recently joined a recent federal complaint about abuse at TCDF. Carlos and Erick’s names were redacted in the public release of the complaint, but they have chosen to share about these incidents using their names to bring attention to the reality of ICE detention in New Mexico. Carlos and Erick also contributed testimony to the recent vigil in remembrance of Kesley Vial, who died by suicide in ICE custody one year ago after spending several weeks detained at TCDF. Erick, who was friends with Kesley, described the horror of seeing Kesley take his life and the nightmares that he had in the days after. “I saw three others try to do the same, but thank God my other companions and I were able to avoid it,” Erick wrote. Carlos noted, “If people outside can raise their voices to keep others like us from going here, it would be very good. Thank you, everyone.” Read more of Carlos’s writing and that of others recently detained in TCDF. Erick and Carlos have communities waiting to welcome and support them as they complete their immigration cases, but ICE in New Mexico has so far refused to release them. They were each transferred from TCDF to Cibola County Correctional Center, which has a similar track record of systemic mistreatment. Erick has been detained by ICE for over a year and Carlos for nearly three months. Now community members are calling on Acting ICE Director Patrick Lechleitner to order that Erick and Carlos be released. Join us in sending an email urging ICE to free Carlos and Erick!
