A safer design for North Roxboro and Mangum Streets through central Durham is at risk of being left out of the City Manager's budget recommendation. Speak up now to demand that the City Manager include funds for completing the 2-way conversion of North Roxboro and Mangum Streets in the upcoming Capital Improvements Program. The City Council just approved a Vision Zero Action Plan on April 7, putting in place strategies to cut traffic deaths and serious injuries in half by 2035 and eliminating them by 2045. Roxboro Street is on the High Injury Network due to the history of crashes resulting in deaths and serious injuries. Funding the completion of a safe Roxboro and Mangum Street corridor is the first real test of the City leaders' commitment to make zero traffic deaths a reality. Bike Durham has been advocating with neighbors along the Roxboro and Mangum Streets corridor, and residents throughout the city, since late 2023 calling for safety and accessibility improvements to the streets. Based on the recommendations of the 2020 Move Durham Study we have been supporting the conversion of these streets back to two-way travel, to slow driving speeds making them safe for all users. The City staff has completed a feasibility study and NCDOT has given conditional approval for the CIty to proceed with design. Last year, City Council funded the first stage of the design process, and it is underway. However, because of concerns about the final cost of construction (which have not yet been determined), funding for the completion of the design process is at risk of being left out of the City Manager's budget recommendation, due to be released at the Council meeting on May 19. Write a letter today urging the City Manager to include funds for completing the 2-way conversion of North Roxboro and Mangum Streets in the upcoming Capital Improvements Program.
