Millions of Uyghurs are being targeted and oppressed by the Chinese government. Every day, Uyghur people are unlawfully detained in prison camps, where they are tortured and exploited for forced labor. In cases where Uyghurs escape this inhumane treatment, they spend years waiting anxiously for refugee status and asylum approval. The process takes as long as 9 years before Uyghur people can live safely in the United States. The United States has not extended protections to those hoping to escape China. If the US believes the Chinese government is committing genocide, then we must do more than make empty statements to the press. The Uyghur Human Rights Protection Act (UHRPA) provides access to refugee resettlement and an expedited asylum process for Uyghurs and Turkic groups hoping to escape genocide perpetrated by the Chinese government.
