Governor Hochul: Build Public Renewables to Meet Our Climate Goals!

When something’s up, New Yorkers don’t stay quiet. And something has been up: Surprise blackouts. Flooding. Rising pollution. Skyrocketing utility bills. Kathy Hochul’s for-profit plan to solve this crisis will build, at best, nowhere near enough the renewables we need to reach New York’s climate mandate. Fortunately, we don’t have to settle. This year, we passed the Build Public Renewables Act and gave New York a new mandate. Use the publicly owned New York Power Authority to build as many renewables it takes to fill the growing for-profit gap. As these renewables are publicly owned, they do everything that corporations won’t. Lowering energy bills. Phasing out toxic gas plants in the most polluted Black and brown communities first. And doing it all by jump starting a new era of good, green union jobs that will finally make the core Green New Deal promise a reality. But while the law is written, the future isn’t. We won a historic victory with BPRA, but the forces that tried to stop us are still here, and they’ll keep trying to claw back our progress until the very last smokestack shuts down. So it’s up to us: from organizing our communities across the state to demand the public renewable projects we deserve, to keeping the pressure on Governor Hochul until we’ve foiled every attempt to put her corporate donor’s desires over our public demands. That's why we're organizing this letter writing campaign.
