The Safety, Not Status campaign (HB26-1143) is about keeping communities safe while removing unnecessary barriers that block qualified Coloradans from education and training for programs like nursing, mental health and trades simply because they lack a Social Security Number. HB26-1143 prohibits an entity from requiring an individual to provide a SSN for a background check for a non-employment-based educational opportunity unless the entity also accepts an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) in lieu of a SSN.
