Help Improve Bus Service for NYC Students

Year after year, families face problems with school bus service. For example, buses show up late or not at all, take far too long to get children to school, provide inconsistent service, and do not provide service home from after-school activities. These issues especially affect students with disabilities, students in temporary housing, and students in foster care, who are more likely to live far from their school and rely on school bus service. To be able to fix some of the problems families experience, NYC needs to update the bus contracts, many of which are more than 40 years old. However, state law doesn’t allow new contracts to include certain job protections that bus drivers and attendants currently have. The last time the City tried to change the contracts without these protections, there was a bus strike, disrupting service for thousands of students. A bill in the State Legislature, S.1018, would allow the City to move forward with new bus contracts while keeping current job protections in place. TAKE ACTION: Email Governor Hochul and your state legislators and tell them to support S.1018 to help get new bus contracts in place and improve bus service for NYC students.
