Help Sound Transit Build Light Rail Faster

	<thumbnail_url>https://can2-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/letters/photos/000/434/729/normal/open-uri20260203-2033900-1t7m4q2</thumbnail_url>

Puget Sound voters overwhelmingly supported Sound Transit 3 in 2016. With over 717,000 “Yes” votes, it was the largest vote for transit in our region’s history. The sooner we build light rail projects, the sooner we get working families out of traffic and put more opportunities within reach. Our region needed these projects yesterday. Building light rail to Tacoma, Everett, West Seattle, Ballard, and a second downtown tunnel all at the same time is a huge expense. But Sound Transit is a rich agency. The challenge is when, not whether Sound Transit has money available. Senate Bill 6148 will give Sound Transit the financial flexibility it needs by allowing it to issue 75-year bonds. This will allow the agency to match Federal bonds and pay for long-lasting infrastructure the same way the federal government pays for long-term public investments. Having this flexibility will also shape the cost-saving scenarios Sound Transit staff will present to the board this spring. SB 6148 will give our region’s leaders more flexibility to avoid cutting projects, keep projects moving, and stick together as a region. SB 6148 has a hearing in the Senate Transportation Committee on Monday, January 19th, at 4 PM. Tell committee members that you want them to vote to pass SB 6148.
