Video footage shows the agent was not in the path of her vehicle when he fired. Renee appeared to be trying to comply while agents shouted conflicting commands. Instead of de-escalating, the agent chose lethal force. The agent could have stepped back. He could have shot the tires. He could have refrained from using his gun at all. Instead, he fired multiple shots into her car, killing her. After the shooting, the video shows ICE agents blocking a bystander doctor from providing emergency aid as Renee lay dying. For more than 30 seconds, no visible medical assistance was given. Minnesota has already shown the country what accountability looks like. Attorney General Keith Ellison successfully prosecuted the officers who murdered George Floyd. That work proved that justice is possible when leaders are willing to act. Ellison has said there will be an investigation. But investigations do not require delay when video evidence establishes probable cause. In homicide cases every day, suspects are arrested first and investigated fully afterward. ICE agents must not be treated differently. Federal authority does not mean federal immunity.
