The White House is using Alligator Alcatraz as an extrajudicial blacksite. About two-thirds of the roughly 1,800 people taken into the prison have vanished from ICE’s database without a trace.4 Families and lawyers don’t know where they are. Now, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wants to build even more “depraved torture camps” like Alligator Alcatraz5 — all as people keep dying in ICE custody and reports increase of widespread abuse throughout ICE detention centers. Congress must immediately investigate these abuses and order these prisons to shut down! Sign the petition: Investigate and hold ICE accountable for horrific abuses. Close Alligator Alcatraz now! The stories from ICE prisons are deeply disturbing. One man taken into Alligator Alcatraz lost consciousness after a medical episode in a widely shared online video. After the video was taken, his family could not get access to his status for several days despite their desperate scrambling to find out if their loved one was dead or alive. Finally, a DHS official told his family that he was alive at a nearby hospital.6 For nearly 1,000 detainees, their families don’t know where they are and if they’re alive. In the last month, three people in ICE custody have died. A man in a Nassau County ICE prison was found not breathing one morning in mid-September. Two men in different California ICE detention centers were pronounced dead after medical episodes.7,8 Instead of addressing ICE disappearing people from their families or the inhumane conditions in ICE prisons, Trump officials are celebrating the horror of mass deportations. Congress must act now and use every power available to stop ICE’s disappearances and shut down Alligator Alcatraz.
