The union contract covering these vital health care workers has expired, so now they’re walking out for raises that keep up with inflation, and better patient care. The plan is for a 4-day strike at hundreds of facilities in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Virginia and Washington DC. Healthcare workers everywhere are reporting massive burnout from being overworked and underpaid. Kaiser Permanente has the money. They have reported more than $3 billion in profits in the first half of 2023 and paid at least 49 corporate executives salaries exceeding $1 million annually. The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions says that if they don’t see movement at the bargaining table in response to the 4-day strike, they’ll do it again for longer and include even more workers.
