Protect Rehabilitation Care at Buffalo General — Take Action Now Kaleida Health is proposing to cut the Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU) at Buffalo General Medical Center from 34 beds to 16 — a more than 50% reduction. If approved by the New York State Department of Health, this proposal would eliminate 22 healthcare jobs and significantly reduce access to hospital-based rehabilitation for stroke survivors, cardiac patients, and medically complex individuals across Western New York. Rehabilitation is not optional. Early, intensive rehab is proven to improve recovery, prevent long-term disability, and reduce hospital readmissions. Cutting these beds will mean delays in care, longer hospital stays, and disrupted recoveries for vulnerable patients. We need healthcare workers and community members to speak up. If you work in healthcare, share your firsthand experience. Describe what happens when rehab is delayed. Explain why hospital-based rehabilitation matters. Talk about the risks of transfers, staffing realities, and the impact on patient outcomes. Decision-makers need to hear from the people who do this work every day. Take one minute to send a message to Kaleida Health leadership and the NYS Department of Health. Tell them: Protect access to hospital-based rehabilitation. Preserve skilled healthcare jobs. Put patient care ahead of short-term cost cutting. Fully examine the regional impact before approving any reduction. Listen to frontline workers. When decisions affect patient recovery and healthcare workers’ livelihoods, silence is not an option. Send your message today and stand up for patients, workers, and our community.
