Americans opening their maps now see “Lake America,” while Canadians and much of the rest of the world still see Lake Ontario. A lake does not change names when you cross a digital border. Lake Ontario has carried its historical Indigenous name for hundreds of years, predating both the United States and Canada. Trump’s executive order does not erase that history. Google made the switch first. Then Trump personally pressured Apple to follow, and Apple did. But not every American map provider bent the knee. MapQuest publicly rejected Trump’s demand, declaring, “we’re not changing it. ”That proves technology companies have a choice about whether they turn their platforms into extensions of his political agenda. Google and Apple can still reverse course. Lake Ontario is still Lake Ontario worldwide, and Americans should not be shown a different version of basic geography simply because Donald Trump demanded it.
