But it’s not going to be the same old lies. Reports indicate that Trump plans to unveil newly declassified material cooked up by his hand picked lackey at the Director of National Intelligence alleged foreign interference, supposed vulnerabilities in voting machines and this: Trump has spent nearly six years refusing to accept that he lost the 2020 election. His claims of massive fraud failed in court, failed under scrutiny, and failed to produce evidence that voting machines changed the result. Now, he wants to place the presidential seal behind even more conspiracy theories and broadcast them directly into millions of homes. The major networks do not owe Trump an uninterrupted national platform. During Biden’s term all three major broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- declined to carry President Biden’s 2022 prime-time speech about threats to democracy. They decided that a presidential speech did not automatically deserve live broadcast coverage. That same editorial standard must apply now. These networks, including FOX, MSNOW, and CNN too, must refuse to turn over their airwaves for a live political production designed to spread election lies before journalists have any opportunity to challenge them. They should monitor Trump’s remarks, investigate any documents he releases, and report any legitimate news afterward with the necessary facts and context. Trump understands the power of live television. Once a falsehood is broadcast to millions of people, corrections rarely travel as far or as fast. A fact-check delivered twenty minutes later cannot erase the damage caused by an uninterrupted presidential presentation built around debunked election claims.
