Native Housing Modernization Act

Housing is a treaty right as well as a basic human right. But policies proposed by the Trump administration are seeking massive cuts to federal housing programs. Thankfully, a bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives have introduced the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Modernization Act (NAHASDA Modernization Act), which would modernize and update 30 year old housing policies, strengthen Tribal self-determination in housing development, expand access to rental housing units and pathways to homeownership, Improve infrastructure development in rural and Tribal communities, and more. Even though the federal government is legally obligated to uphold Tribal treaty rights, such as providing funding for housing, Native people on Turtle Island are more likely to experience houselessness than any other group. In the midst of a housing shortage, Native communities are facing overcrowding, aging infrastructure, and rising construction costs. Send a message to your members of Congress urging immediate passage of this critical housing modernization legislation that would protect housing grants from cuts and treat housing like the treaty right that it is.
