Pass an Eviction Moratorium in Oakland Now

Right now, Oaklanders are struggling with the effects of the current public health crisis on our families, our health, and our housing security. Since the COVID-19, many of us have seen our incomes reduced or eliminated. Many of us have had to unexpectedly care for children who are out of school or have had to take care of sick family members or our own pressing health needs. Many Oaklanders are living paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford this sudden and unexpected loss of income. Many are having difficulty handling the new instability in their lives. Tell Oakland City Councilmembers to TAKE ACTION NOW! and do the following things: 1. Pass An Immediate Moratorium on ALL Residential Evictions 2. Prevent Future Evictions for Nonpayment of Rent 3. Protect Local Businesses from Eviction 4. Limit Rent Increases and Late Fees During the State of Emergency In this moment, we know that strong emergency responses are needed on a county, state and federal level. This will need to include a moratorium on foreclosures for low-income homeowners who will be hard-pressed to pay their mortgages; housing for people experiencing homelessness; an end to sweeps and closures of homeless encampments and vehicle tows; rent and mortgage payment assistance; limits on commercial rent increases for small businesses; extensions of eviction court closures for as long as is needed, and more. There’s more to fight for. And there’s a lot more to figure out. However, that should not stop us from taking decisive action now.
