Ohio Advancing “Right To Hunt” - Take Action

Ohio lawmakers are advancing two dangerous resolutions—SJR8 and HJR1—that would change Ohio’s Constitution, and wildlife will pay the price. Please take 60 seconds to email your state legislators and urge them to vote NO on SJR 8 and HJR 1. If passed, these resolutions will place a proposed constitutional amendment on Ohio’s November ballot claiming to protect Ohioans’ “right to hunt.” But hunting is already legal in Ohio. What this proposal will actually accomplish is deeply troubling. The resolution language in SJR 8 mandates that hunting and fishing be the “preferred means of managing… wildlife.” Mandating hunting as the “preferred” approach could push agency staff to authorize hunts before populations are fully recovered and restrict their ability to prioritize non-lethal coexistence strategies. At a time when many wildlife populations face increasing pressure from habitat loss and climate change, state wildlife agencies need to be focused on conserving and recovering wildlife — not prioritizing killing them. Further, the resolution language protects “traditional methods” of hunting, which can be interpreted to include the most cruel and unpopular methods of wildlife killing, such as the use of body-crushing traps. Doing this may elevate one stakeholder group, which values trapping, above the broader public in the state’s constitution. SJR 8 and HJR 1 require a super-majority vote in both chambers before heading to the statewide ballot, so every vote we can influence matters! Please write your state legislators today.
